Berlin Program in Critical Theory

The Berlin Program in Critical Theory will be inaugurated in the Fall of 2026. It affords up to five highly qualified advanced graduate students from a wide variety of disciplines a unique opportunity to spend an academic year in Berlin familiarizing themselves with research in different areas of interest to critical theory broadly conceived. During the Fall quarter, the Critical Theory Professor from Northwestern University will lead a weekly research seminar at the Center for Social Critique at Humboldt University and will act as first point of contact and liaison between Northwestern and other partner institutions in Berlin. The seminar will focus on questions of current concern in contemporary critical theory and can also serve as a forum for students’ work in progress. After attending the seminar, the visiting graduate students from Northwestern will participate in the research colloquium from the CSC director while conducting their research at Humboldt University.

The Critical Theory Professor from Northwestern teaching the research seminar in the Fall of 2026 will be Professor Cristina Lafont. The research colloquium will be led by the Director of the Center for Social Critique, Professor Rahel Jaeggi.
